Logical Consequences for Children Can Lead To Positive Changes

Earlier this week I was sitting at my desk when I heard a tentative knock on my door and a young voice asking, “Do you have a minute to talk, Ms. Alena?” I looked up and assured our 9-year-old that I did have time to talk to him.

I’d been expecting this visit because his Housemom wanted him to personally tell me about writing his brother’s name on the seat of our relatively new mower.

After he confessed to what he’d done, I asked what his discipline from Ms. Crystal was. He tearfully replied that he was ‘going to have to pay to have the seat replaced and didn’t have enough money to do it’. He asked if he could do some work around the house or pull weeds to earn it.

After telling him how much I appreciated him being truthful about what he’d done and his willingness to do the right thing, we came up with a plan for him to get started pulling weeds and picking up pinecones after school the following day.

Prayerfully this logical consequence will serve as a positive life skill as he continues to learn and grow. Just as negativity in one area of a child’s life can influence other areas, so can small, positive changes.
